Before and After Thoughts on "Blind" People

We all have many thoughts every day and those thoughts usually come with our own biases or pre-judgements.  Often those thoughts change when given a chance to "see" something from the other side.  I'm Jennifer Regruth, a Classroom Champions teacher and my class and I are very lucky to be connected with our Athlete Mentor, Lex Gillette, an incredible track star, who happens to be blind.  He lost his sight at age 10 and has become an amazing athlete - but just as importantly, an amazing person.

As a teacher, formative assessments are powerful - they will tell you what the kids know before a lesson, and what progress, if any, they have made after it.  At the beginning of the year, I decided to do this with the idea of blindness.  I asked them to write a quick paragraph: "What do you think of when you think of a blind person?"

Their responses varied a little, but basically they felt sorry for people who were blind, were happy they are not blind, guessed that blind people were scared, knew that you should help people who can't see, or thought of them as "being trapped in a dark world."  I collected and kept these papers.

Fast forward to a few months of communicating with Lex later. After swapping videos, tweets, pictures and having a Hangout (live video chat) with Lex our understanding began to change. Through Lex's use of Google Glass we were even able to watch his world 'through his eyes' while he trained, played the piano, shot hoops, and used his iPhone and Macbook! We often tweeted a Question of the Day to Lex, (my students were so curious about his day to day living:  ie. How do you know if your clothes match?  how do you do laundry?) to which he gracefully and quickly replied to every single one, which thrilled all of us.

What a difference this connection has made!

These quotes directly from the kids tell it best.  I will include a few:

Damen: When I think of a blind person now, I think of Lex-how he set his goals and he is trying to reach them.

Brandon: I don't feel that scared if I went blind, because, like Lex said, "Blindness just might be another way to see."

Daetona:  I have learned a good lesson about don't judge people by how they look or why they look like it.

Breanna: ...and you don't worry about what something really looks like-you judge by heart...

Isaac:  Blind people can do whatever they choose to do.

Katya: I don't think you can be blind. You see right through a person- who they are.

Aiden:  NEVER judge a book by its cover. I HATE when people are labeled, so I think blind people are the same of me or anyone else.  Having Lex made me change my mind about people.

Elanis:  There is nothing different about blind people except they can't see-they can do everything we can do.

Rylin:  I think even though Lex is blind, he can actually see with his mind.

Savannah: Now I'm not so sorry anymore. I can't believe what I can learn from blind people.

Brooke: I learned when you are blind, you can still get around, you just have different tools!

Faithe: Really there is nothing called disabled.  If you can see from your heart and feel from your heart, you can do anything! Why? Well, the heart is the most powerful thing because without a heart, how can you love, and love is the biggest thing in the world. Lex is the best example for that because, really WHO NEEDS SIGHT WHEN YOU HAVE A VISION! Thank you, Lex, for teaching me that.

I was completely blown away by their insight and heart. I honestly don't know who is most affected by this remarkable Classroom Champions program:  the children, the athlete, or me.  We have all grown, changed our thinking, and learned new things. I couldn't be happier for me or my students that we are lucky enough to be involved with Classroom Champions and connected to someone as inspirational as Lex. Remember, it's never too late to change your mind... sometimes you just have to give yourself the opportunity. #DreamBig

Lex Gillette Posted About Us on His Facebook Page!

Couldn't have been more thrilled about reading this and what we mean to Lex.  Our class is so lucky to be connected to him through the Classroom Champions program.  It is expecially cool that Lex is using Google Glass to show us life "through his eyes."  He is a an amazing person and athlete, who happens to be blind.

Our +ClassroomChampions Lesson on Perseverance with +LexGillette!

For our December lesson on Perseverance, we started with the challenge video from our mentor athlete, Lex Gillette. Talk about a perfect example of perseverance! Our track Paralympic athlete is blind, but hasn't let that stop him from amazing things: playing piano, writing songs, bike riding, sky diving and more. We are really enjoying getting to know him-and the more we find out, they more amazed we are! I will write more about our live chat with Lex in a separate post, but I wanted to include a few pics. We all had a great time!

   Since Lex life had such true examples of perseverance in his own life, we had many discussions about him, how even though some things are harder, he never gives up. We watched videos of him doing all these amazing things we would never dream someone without sight could do. We generated a chart of great words related to perseverance and decided to make acrostics to share in the hallway to inspire others.

   We are working in journals to talk about times we have each struggled and come up against something difficult, but kept trying and readjusting until we persevered! One of the kids brought up the United States Post Office motto and since none of us could remember it exactly, we looked it up and decided to change it a bit to fit 4th graders who will never give up! SUCH a great idea! Read at the bottom to see our final version.

No bullies, nor distractions, nor fears, nor failures of life will stop these 4th graders from the completion of their dreams and goals! We can do it and you can do it too! 

We were so happy to receive an amazing boxes of surprised from +Classroom Champions! I wish I had recorded all the oohhhs and aaahhss when I pulled all of these gifts from the box. What a great present for us all! Thank you Classroom Champions! We will use and wear our items with pride and be reminded often of how lucky we are to be part of such a great program! OUR PADLET for The Fourteenth Goldfish!

   The #GRA2015, Global Read Aloud is underway! We are all enjoying the book and the kids are full of ideas about what will happen next.  The book has done a good job of giving us descriptions of the characters, so the students have done a great job creating predictions.
   We decided to use a tool called Padlet to share out thoughts and predictions with other classrooms. I created a new Padlet and shared the link with the kids and away they went!  They even figured out how to add pictures.
   We connected via GHO with another classroom to share our predictions.  They students loved being on camera sharing their ideas with other 4th grade students. We are looking forward to connecting with them again at the end of the book to see if our predictions were accurate.  These creative kiddos were full of great ideas!

A Successful Bee Hive Removal!

We were lucky enough to have about 60,000 visitors all summer- a honeybee hive in our front yard about 20 feet off the ground. We respected each other's spaces and did not impede on each other's territories. And, since they are doomed to die at the first frost, we contacted a beekeeper to come rescue them. We were amazing to watch him carefully remove the hive a section at a time...BAREHANDED! Only 8 stings total- one for my son and the rest on the keeper. Not band considered the incredibly high number of bees we had! Enjoy this video that shows just how he did it! ***Any time, any place, learn!*** ;)

   ​I did a check on the lifetime views on my YouTube channel today and found it has been viewed by 120 countries around the world!  That is just mind boggling to me.  I was curious to see, so I created a map showing them all!  I know some countries do not have internet and some have restrictions, so overall, we are doing pretty well!

Getting to know you bags

Students were asked to bring 5 things that represent who they are in a brown paper bag. They then took turns revealing items that showed who they are! We had a ball getting to know each other! Great job, kiddos!
