So exited that our montage of Classroom Champions subjects made it all the way to Meryl and Charlie. We are happy they posted it on their Facebook page! I hope they know how much we LOVED having them as our mentors this year. Couldn't have been better!

Google Alerts

We are thrilled to be paired with ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White in our Classroom Champions program. (Check it information about this awesome program here.)
I was often searching the internet for the latest information about where they were traveling, how they were finishing in competitions, or appearances they were making.  Then I found out about Google Alerts, and the whole task became SSSOOOO much easier.

Google Alerts is a great way of being notified about news or information concerning your athlete is posted on the internet.  It's super easy to do, and you will receive an email each time your athlete makes the news!  We have read articles about how Meryl and Charlie paired up as kids, how their moms are involved, how DWTS start, Derek Hough met with them about choreography, just to name a few! Usually after I am notified about our ice dancers by Google Alerts, I read the article with my class to keep them in the loop.  They always love hearing stories about their athletes!

When I read a newsworthy story about about Meryl and Charlie, I also will tweet the news story to share on Twitter.  If you are on Twitter, it's a great way to share news about your athlete.  You can add @classroomchamps to your tweet too!  It's a great way to get this great program and news out on social media!

You could use Google alerts for lots of ways in the classroom too!  Check it out and let me know what you think!  Share any ideas you come up with!  It would be great to hear all the creative ideas!

Our Google Hangout with Meryl Davis and Charlie White!

Through our awesome Classroom Champions project, we were able to have a live video chat with our athlete mentors, Meryl and Charlie. They took a break from training to check in with our class and let us get to know them. Needless to say they were amazing and the kids were instantly connected with them! 3,000 visits from 54 countries to our YouTube!

Our YouTube.com channel has been visited by almost 3,000 visitors from 54 COUNTRIES!!!!  Isn't that uh-maz-ing?!!  Our channel has videos we have uploaded with activities and songs from our classroom and also videos we have watched in class to enhance learning.  If you have a chance, stop by and comment or request.  We would love to hear from you!

Love the GoogleDocs-

   The fabulous students of Room 18 collaborated with partners to create a Google Presentation on the Immune System of the Body.  The rubric allowed for a wide variety of presentation details.  They projects turned out wonderfully!
   Students have computer knowledge to research, create content, create new slides, insert images and photos and resize them, make background themes, spell check and most important do real time collaboration from across the room!  Google Docs allows students to share documents with each other and work on them AT THE SAME TIME.
   While one is typing, another cursor shows up where the partner is updating content in real time.  In a side chat window, students can comment on changes that need to be made or compliment each other on content being added.  Many times students will set a time to work on these projects at home, since all they need is their login to access them.  We printed slides of Google Presentations to hang in the hall and show other students!
   Stop in sometime and ask any member of Room 18 about it.  They would be happy to talk to you!

Titan visitors!!!

Students from SMS came to share their rock presentation stories with us!!  Their 7th grade classroom researched types of rocks and wrote interesting stories to peak the interests of 4th graders. It sure worked!  Our kids loved it!  Thanks, Mrs. Beavers, for arranging the visit!

Sonya's amazing talent!

Can you guess what Sonya's incredible secret talent is? By the looks of this sweet gal, I am sure you would never guess she is a black belt in karate and often takes home the 1st place trophy in competitions- even when competing against boys! She brought in the trophies she recently won at a competition in Chicago and got to share some great stories with the class! Great job, Sonya!

Math Bowl Guest Alum!

We were thrilled to have Andrew R., SHS Math Whiz come to talk with Math Bowl team members about the upcoming competition. He brought several math competition trophies, hints and helpful suggestions with us! Thanks, Andrew!  Doesn't he look VERY excited about math?!  ;)
